"Some of the recent gems of Vietnamese music have been made by ex-pats around the world rather than musicians in their home country. In Vietnam, drum machines and synthesisers often accompany instruments such as dan bau (monochord) or dan tranh (zither), all rather too cheesy for western tastes. Here's another one. San Francisco Bay resident Van-Anh Vanessa Vo plays both dan tranh and dan bau on this album, a feat unusual in itself. Her interpretations of traditional tunes played solo (...) are fairly radical, adding tension to the beauty, and superbly recorded ... On her arrangement of Erik Satie's Gnosienne No 3 she plays both dan bau and bass dan tranh (dan bau is usually solo), her performance dripping with emotion. Van-Anh gets even more experimental on the title track and her own composition, playing the Swiss percussion instrument, Hang, and singing in a semi-improvisational, manic style ... Kronos Quartet almost bring a semblance of normality with their appearanceonGreen River Delta ... To say Van-Anh Vanessa Vo is taking Vietnamese traditional music and instruments in a new direction feels like an understatement"
