"Haydn's ... String Quartets Op 71 of 1793 (Linn) are witty, skilful, and bursting with an energy that Scotland's Maxwell Quartet capture to the full. Here at the start of each quartet Haydn grabs the audience's attention - with a bold cadence, a single call to attention, or a brief slow introduction - and then explores the material with a deftness that leaves you smiling ... all are realised with perfect poise ... The excellent recording helps the quartet to sing resonantly but precisely"

"Earthy robustness will take you a long way in these quartets; and with their clean, direct style, the all-male, all-Scottish Maxwell Quartet vividly realise the fast movements' flamboyant contrasts of texture, register and dynamics ... Haydn gives all four instruments his nearest approach ... Here and elsewhere, their precision at speed and unanimity of bowing are a match for allcomers ... A thoroughful delightful performance"

"There are plenty of enthusiasts willing to buy a handsomely-presented and beautifully-recorded disc of Scots fiddle music arranged for string quartet, and certainly there are plenty who would be in the market for such clean and perceptive recordings of Haydn's Op.71 quartets, but I doubt whether the two markets overlap sufficiently to make this an attractive proposition for either ... So does this weird mixture of Haydn quartets and Scots fiddle tunes work as a single CD release? It certainly does not give any greater insight into Haydn's music, nor does it trace realistic musical links between these disparate styles, but it does give a distinctive flavour to performances which on any terms are well worth hearing. And whatever music they play, the Maxwell's never fail to impress with their total assimilation of the idiom"
